Turning Seawater Into Survival: Delivering Naoero (formerly Nauru)'s Water Future in Five Months

Access to reliable drinking water is one of the biggest challenges facing small island nations, and Naoero (formerly Nauru) is no exception. HTS Constructions was engaged to help address this head-on, delivering a 2.1 ML per day reverse osmosis desalination facility for the island in just five months.

Working alongside the Australian Government, the Government of Naoero (formerly Nauru) and MTC, HTS carried out a full design review of the proposed plant before construction began. This review identified opportunities to improve reliability and efficiency, including splitting the RO system into two separate trains for better redundancy, and adding anti-scaling measures to protect the equipment long-term.

The project scope extended well beyond the treatment plant itself. HTS established new seawater intake infrastructure, including three bores and a pumphouse, to guarantee a steady supply of raw seawater. On the power side, the team confirmed the capacity of the Main Switch Board and backed it up with a 500 kVA generator, along with carefully planned cabling routes and earthing design to keep the facility running reliably.

Construction involved mobilising materials and equipment for the new plant, including pipe supports, chemical tanks and cartridge filters, with the layout optimised to reduce unnecessary piping and streamline day-to-day operation. Safety was built into every stage of the design, with access platforms for chemical tanks, safety showers and bunded chemical storage all incorporated to meet relevant standards.

The result is a facility that will provide Naoero (formerly Nauru)'s residents and industries with a consistent, high-quality source of potable water for years to come, a genuine step forward for the island's water security.
